Patient Transport Service

Ardgowan Hospice

People with life limiting conditions may face escalating transport costs when attending hospital appointments in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board region.

More than 30years ago, Ardgowan Hospice identified that this was an unnecessary worry and burden for patients and at probably one of the most frightening and extremely difficult times in their lives.  As a direct result of this initiative, our dedicated patient transport service was born. This service is offered ‘free of charge’ and is only made possible by the unbelievable commitment of our fantastic volunteer drivers and the incredible financial generosity of the people Inverclyde.

Did you know…

  • 303 patients benefitted from transport
  • 38 volunteer drivers take 130 people each week to appointments
  • Over 130,000 miles travelled every year

One such driver is retired solicitor, Kenny Gilmour. He started driving for the Hospice in 1990, after his father benefitted from the service.

“After diagnosis my father had to travel to the Western Infirmary for treatment. During the first week he was transported by the hospital ambulance service that picked up and dropped off six other patients. My father was completely exhausted. At the start of week two, someone from the Hospice phoned to say that they would send a car for him. The difference was quite incredible. He wasn’t as tired and it helped to see a friendly face at a very difficult time.”

One of our transport users said: “My wife and I would like to thank the Ardgowan Hospice for the excellent service provided to both of us over the past month to Inverclyde Hospital or the Beatson at Garnavel…we would have been lost without you.”

Ardgowan Hospice Patient Transport Service is generously provided in part by community donations and is a life-line for many of our patients. Our average annual mileage is 98,000 miles, resulting in transport costs of almost £39,000

We and our patients are indebted to our drivers but we can always do with more help and support.  If you, your partner or friends could offer time and your car, we would like to hear from you… why not become one of our Patient Transport drivers?
