The documentary Island follows four individuals experience the year in which their lives will end. Illness progresses, relationships gently shift, and we are witness to rarely seen and intensely private moments. Filmed over 12 months on the Isle of Wight, Mountbatten Hospice, Island is a life-affirming reflection on the phenomena of dying, portraying the transition away from personhood and observing the last days and hours of life and the moment of death.
The theme for this year’s Dying Matters campaign is Are We Ready, and looks at the practical and emotional steps we all need to take to be ready for the end of our lives. Opinion polls show that only about a third of people have written a will or thought about their funeral, and even fewer have thought about their end of life care, or made a decision about organ donation. We know that lots of people have questions or concerns about end of life and what that means and we hope to answer as many of those as possible.
