Shop Spotlight: Oak Mall
The Heart of the Oak Mall Shop
Since 2010, the Oak Mall shop has been a vital part of the Greenock community, serving as more than just a place to shop. At the core of its success is a commitment to supporting local causes and creating a space where everyone feels welcome.
“It’s not just about selling items,” Viktoriia Wyllie, the shop supervisor, explains. The Oak Mall Shop is dedicated to its mission beyond sales – providing a place that gives back to the community daily.
A Mission Beyond Sales: Giving Back to the Community
“It’s about giving back and supporting causes that matter,” Viktoriia proudly shares. “This shop has become a welcoming environment where volunteers and customers feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves.”
From raising funds for important causes to offering affordable, sustainable options to the local community, the Oak Mall Shop embodies the spirit of giving.
Supporting Ukrainian Refugees: A Space for Belonging
When war broke out in Ukraine, the shop’s team knew they had to help. As Ukrainian refugees began arriving in the area, the Oak Mall Shop became a welcoming haven for those in need.
“We wanted to provide a space where they could feel included in the community,” Viktoriia explains. The shop has become a place where refugees not only find a sense of belonging but also the opportunity to volunteer, connect, and settle into their new lives.
Volunteering as a Path to Healing
The shop has since played a crucial role for many Ukrainian volunteers, offering them a place to volunteer while building new friendships. One of the standout volunteers is Natascha, whose journey has been an inspiration to everyone involved.
“Seeing people like Natascha contribute, despite the hardships they’ve been through, is incredibly rewarding,” Viktoriia shares. “It’s amazing to witness their resilience and be part of their journey toward finding stability and joy.”
A Source of Pride for Ardgowan Hospice
Heather, the volunteer coordinator at Ardgowan Hospice, couldn’t be prouder of the shop’s work with Ukrainian volunteers. “Seeing people from Ukraine join our shop team has been one of my proudest moments. Even after all they’ve been through, they’ve made a lasting impact on the Inverclyde community.”
Fostering Connections Through Every Interaction
Over the years, the Oak Mall Shop has become known for the strong connections it fosters with its customers and volunteers. “We’ve gotten to know so many people by working here. Those personal connections make this job special,” says one of the long-time volunteers.
Unlike our Gourock and West Stewart Street shops, in our Oakmall shop, you’ll find a full corner of the store dedicated to all things kids – including some beautiful knitted baby items made by our volunteers! Overall, the shop offers a unique mix of new and second-hand items, drawing in locals of all ages with unbeatable bargains and a meaningful mission.
Sustainability and Charity: A Perfect Match
“Buying second-hand is a win for everyone,” the shop team emphasises. “Not only can you find great bargains, but you’re also shopping sustainably and helping us raise vital funds for the Hospice. It’s a great way to give back to the community while being mindful of the environment.”
A Shop That’s Stood the Test of Time
Margaret, a long-time volunteer, echoes these sentiments. “This shop has come a long way, but its impact remains the same. It’s still a pillar of the Inverclyde community.”
Nestled in the heart of Greenock at the Oak Mall, the shop continues to draw in visitors who appreciate both its convenient location and the unique experience it offers.
A Customer’s Perspective: Why the Oak Mall Shop Stands Out
One loyal customer shared their thoughts on what makes the shop so special: “You always feel welcome here. They remember your name, ask about your family – it’s those moments that make the experience so personal.”
Another customer praised the shop for its unbeatable bargains: “I’ve left here with a basket full of clothes for a great price. You just can’t find deals like that anywhere else! It also makes you feel better knowing that your money is going to support people with life-limiting illnesses and not some millionaire on a yacht!”.
A Bright Future Ahead for the Oak Mall Shop
As the Oak Mall Shop looks ahead, the team remains committed to continuing its work of supporting Ardgowan Hospice and fostering human connections. With a decade of service behind them, the future is bright for this cherished community space.
