Urgent Appeal to Close £575,000 Funding Gap and Protect Vital Care

Ardgowan Hospice has officially launched an Urgent Appeal following the announcement of a critical £575,000 deficit. The shortfall, largely attributed to insufficient statutory funding and rising operational costs, has already necessitated a significant organisational restructure to safeguard frontline clinical services.

The Hospice, which provides essential palliative and end-of-life care for over 1,100 patients and families across Inverclyde annually, currently receives only 36% of its running costs from the Scottish Government. This leaves a staggering 64% to be raised through charitable donations, fundraising events and charity retail income.

A Call to Corporate Leaders

While the Inverclyde community has always shown incredible generosity, the Hospice is now making a direct call to larger corporates and local businesses to step forward where possible:

  • Corporate Partnerships: Businesses can support the appeal through “Charity of the Year” initiatives, match-funding schemes or employee-led fundraising challenges

  • Strategic Support: Beyond financial aid, the Hospice is eager to engage with firms that can offer pro-bono professional services, volunteering hours, inventory for retail shops, or sponsorship for upcoming events

Supporting Beyond the Wallet

Recognising the ongoing cost of living pressures, Ardgowan Hospice emphasises that there are many vital ways to get behind the appeal that do not require a direct financial donation:

  • Volunteer Your Time: The Hospice relies on over 200 volunteers to function. Opportunities range from helping in charity shops and offices to fundraising events and ward support

  • Donate Goods: High-quality unwanted clothes, books, and homeware are urgently needed for the Hospice’s retail shops

  • Spread the Word: Raising awareness of the appeal within social circles and workplaces is a powerful, cost-free way to help the message reach those in a position to support the appeal

Graham Gardiner, CEO of Ardgowan Hospice, stated:

“The messages of support we have received since sharing our difficult news have been overwhelming. We know our community already gives so much, which is why this appeal isn’t just about money; it’s about a journey of resilience and compassion. We are asking everyone, from individuals to our largest local employers, to help us in any way they can to ensure no one in Inverclyde has to face a life-limiting illness alone”.
