Who We Are

Each year we say hello and welcome to around 1,000 local patients and their families, offering them with a huge range of support from end of life care to supporting carers, and from helping children cope with grief to helping patients return to work after an illness.

Becoming the best at what we do

To ensure we deliver the best care for the people we support, the team here at Ardgowan Hospice are committed to enhancing their skills and knowledge of palliative care, and they also work with other health and social care professionals involved with palliative care to enhance their experience too. We also participate in research and development to improve our knowledge and that of the wider community.

Our Misson

At Ardgowan Hospice, our mission is to work with health, social care and education professionals to ensure we offer the highest quality of care to the Inverclyde community and beyond.

Our History

Since we opened our doors in 1981, we have always sought to evolve, ensuring that we adapt to the changing needs of our community. We continue to support people at the end of their life with personalised 1:1 care, we also support them, their families and carers from the moment they are diagnosed with a life-limiting illness such as cancer, heart failure, COPD and neurological conditions.

We are a charity and all our services are free. Over 60% of our £11,000 a day running costs need to be raised through fundraising and donations from compassionate individuals, groups, organisations and foundations.

On the 13th of July 1981, Ardgowan Hospice was incorporated as a limited company. Our first service was our passenger transport service which is still running to this day! To find out more about this service, please email transport@ardgowanhospice.org

First patient admitted to IPU which was officially opened by HRH Princess Margaret. This was also the first year that we hosted our, then annual, Hospice Ball!

On the 12th of June 2001, HRH King Charles visited Ardgowan Hospice to officially open our ACCESS building.

Before becoming an independent charity in 2024, Compassionate Inverclyde was launched as an Ardgowan Hospice service in March 2017.

We welcomed our new mascot, Ace, the bear to the team. If you would like Ace to visit your school, community group or event, please contact fundraising@ardgowanhospice.org

With new leadership, team members, services and a new five year strategy, the future of Ardgowan Hospice is as bright as ever.

As a celebration of the hospice’s new era in providing hospice care in Inverclyde, we are delighted to introduce a brand-new logo and colour scheme to embody our ongoing endeavours.

With fresh new services, innovative approaches to care, and a growing, multi-disciplinary team, it’s hard to think of a more fitting symbol to represent this exciting new era for Ardgowan Hospice than the perpetual bloom of a daisy.

The Hospice team also likes to think that the daisy symbol aligns with the original meaning of ‘palliative’ (Palliative comes from the Latin word, palliare, which means “to cloak.”). The patient is in the centre of the daisy, protected and encircled by all of Ardgowan Hospice’s services.
