Ardgowan Hospice Welcomes Steve Graham as New Chair of the Board

Ardgowan Hospice is delighted to announce the appointment of Steve Graham as the new Chair of the charity’s Board of Trustees. Steve brings with him a wealth of leadership experience, spanning over 35 years across the charitable, university, public, and private sectors.

Steve recently retired from his role as Chief Executive Officer of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, where he served for over seven years until March 2024. During his tenure, Steve was responsible for the strategic development and day-to-day operations of the College, a registered charity established by royal charter in 1599. Under his leadership, the College continued to deliver world-class assessment, training, and lifelong learning for its 16,000 fellows and members globally.

Prior to this, Steve was the Executive Director of the Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde, overseeing the £89 million capital project from concept to completion. The Centre, officially opened by HRH the Queen in 2015, now stands as the cornerstone of the Glasgow Innovation District, supporting research, innovation, and technology development with an annual turnover of £40 million.

Steve’s career also includes significant contributions to Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government, where he led the launch of the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service (SMAS) in 2006. The service continues to deliver millions of pounds in added value to Scottish manufacturing businesses through growth, innovation, and efficiency.

Speaking about his appointment, Steve Graham said: “I am honoured to take on the role of Chair at Ardgowan Hospice. The work the hospice does for the community within Inverclyde and beyond is truly inspiring, and I look forward to supporting the team in continuing to deliver compassionate care for those who need it most.”

Ardgowan Hospice’s Chief Executive, Graham Gardiner, welcomed Steve’s appointment: “We are thrilled to have Steve join us as Chair. His extensive experience in leadership, strategic development, and charitable work will be invaluable as we continue to grow and serve our community.”

Since retiring in September 2024, Steve has enjoyed pursuing his passion for road cycling, including adventures in the Alps, Pyrenees, and Scotland. He lives in Cardross with his wife, Martine, and enjoys cooking and travelling. He looks forward to taking part in Ardgowan Hospice’s Five Ferry Cycle Challenge this summer!
